A lot of effort was put in to counter the tilt on one side but when no effective solution was found, the construction halted.Ĭonstruction work remained closed for almost a century and later the open bell-chamber to the white marble tower was added in 1350-72, by Tommaso Pisano. However, the leaning of the tower to its south side, started even before the third storey was finished. Its foundation stone was laid in 1173 when Pisa counted among the most powerful maritime republic of Italy. When in the city, it's quite common for tourists to head for this structure first. The tilt in the tower was not intentional for this bell tower accompanying a cathedral in Pisa. The Leaning Tower of Pisa or Torre Pendente di Pisa as Italians call it is a freestanding bell tower, a rather popular tourist attraction across the globe.
